    Magnetic Properties of Dilute Alloys: Equations for Magnetization and its Structural Fluctuations

    The dilute Heisenberg ferromagnet is studied taking into account fluctuations of magnetization caused by disorder. A self-consistent system of equations for magnetization and its mean quadratic fluctuations is derived within the configurationally averaged two-time temperature Green's function method. This system of equations is analised at low concentration of non-magnetic impurities. Mean relative quadratic fluctuations of magnetization are revealed to be proportional to the square of concentration of impurities.Comment: 16 pages, LaTe

    Effects of various additives on antioxidant and antimicrobial effectiveness in emulsion-type sausages

    We investigated the effects of rosemary extract (RE), α-tocopherol (AT) and chitosan (CH) added individually or in combination as compared with butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) on microbiological parameters [total viable count (TVC), lactic acid bacteria (LAB), enterobacteria (ENB), pseudomonas bacteria (PSY)], pH and lipid oxidation of emulsion-type sausages stored for 28 days at 4°C. TVC, LAB, ENB, and PSY counts were significantly increased (P<0.05) in all treatments throughout the refrigerated storage. CH and its combination with either RE or AT, or BHA alone, had the minor antimicrobial effectiveness compared to individual use of RE or AT (P<0.05). However, there were no differences (P>0.05) in all microbial counts between AT and control groups during the whole storage period. Overall storage had a significant effect on lowering pH, but no influence of additives on pH values was detected, except for 2and 28 days of storage. During refrigerated storage, CH and its combination, or BHA in emulsion-type sausages was more effective in delaying lipid oxidation compared to RE and AT (P<0.05). In conclusion, this study showed the minimal antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of using CH and its combination or BHA alone in emulsion-type sausages rather than single antioxidant.Key words: Rosemary extract, α-tocopherol, chitosan, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), antioxidative effect, antimicrobial effect

    Network-Level Structural Abnormalities of Cerebral Cortex in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

    Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) usually begins in childhood and adolescence and causes lifelong damage to several major organs including the brain. Despite increasing evidence of T1DM-induced structural deficits in cortical regions implicated in higher cognitive and emotional functions, little is known whether and how the structural connectivity between these regions is altered in the T1DM brain. Using inter-regional covariance of cortical thickness measurements from high-resolution T1-weighted magnetic resonance data, we examined the topological organizations of cortical structural networks in 81 T1DM patients and 38 healthy subjects. We found a relative absence of hierarchically high-level hubs in the prefrontal lobe of T1DM patients, which suggests ineffective top-down control of the prefrontal cortex in T1DM. Furthermore, inter-network connections between the strategic/executive control system and systems subserving other cortical functions including language and mnemonic/emotional processing were also less integrated in T1DM patients than in healthy individuals. The current results provide structural evidence for T1DM-related dysfunctional cortical organization, which specifically underlie the top-down cognitive control of language, memory, and emotion. © 2013 Lyoo et al

    Egr-1 Activation by Cancer-Derived Extracellular Vesicles Promotes Endothelial Cell Migration via ERK1/2 and JNK Signaling Pathways

    Various mammalian cells, including cancer cells, shed extracellular vesicles (EVs), also known as exosomes and microvesicles, into surrounding tissues. These EVs play roles in tumor growth and metastasis by promoting angiogenesis. However, the detailed mechanism of how cancer-derived EVs elicit endothelial cell activation remains unknown. Here, we provide evidence that early growth response-1 (Egr-1) activation in endothelial cells is involved in the angiogenic activity of colorectal cancer cell-derived EVs. Both RNA interference-mediated downregulation of Egr-1 and ERK1/2 or JNK inhibitor significantly blocked EV-mediated Egr-1 activation and endothelial cell migration. Furthermore, lipid raft-mediated endocytosis inhibitor effectively blocked endothelial Egr-1 activation and migration induced by cancer-derived EVs. Our results suggest that Egr-1 activation in endothelial cells may be a key mechanism involved in the angiogenic activity of cancer-derived EVs. These findings will improve our understanding regarding the proangiogenic activities of EVs in diverse pathological conditions including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases.open11617sciescopu
